Antique Grain Sack Cushion Covers from Transylvania

Four stories. One Transylvania. Each collection brings antique grain sack cushion covers rescued from a different corner of the region, carrying a different history, a different stripe, a different life. Every grain sack cushion cover is an original, hand-woven circa 1900. Not a reproduction. Not restocked. When a piece is gone, it is gone forever.

Heritage Collection

Not every grain sack comes with a name attached.

Some were found in barns far from any village record. Some passed through too many hands over too many decades. The family that wove the stripe is gone. The mill where they brought their harvest is gone. But the textile remains — as durable and honest as the day it was woven.

The Heritage Collection is our largest archive. These are the pieces whose exact provenance has been lost to time, but whose material authenticity is beyond question. The hemp is real. The weave is real. The century of use written into every thread is real.

Sometimes anonymity is its own kind of history.

Square grain sack cushion, Heritage Collection, oatmeal antique handspun hemp, 4-shaft twill weave, centered stripe group — three narrow burgundy lines on wide oatmeal ground, Transylvania

A grain sack cushion cover with three narrow burgundy lines on oatmeal hemp – quiet, precise, unmistakable. The subtlety of a family that knew exactly who they were.

Valley Collection

Every river valley in Transylvania had its own weaving tradition.

The hemp grown along the Crișul Repede wove differently from the hemp retted in the Mureș. The water, the soil, the hands — all left their mark in the thread.

The Valley Collection traces each piece back to the valley where it was made — Valea Crișurilor, Valea Barcăului, Valea Mureșului. Not just “Transylvania” — but which valley, which river, which tradition. This is the most documented part of our archive.

For the collector who wants to know not just what they are holding, but where it came from.

Square grain sack cushion, Valley Collection, oatmeal antique handspun hemp, 4-shaft twill weave, grain sack stripe — black flanking one narrow red center line, Transylvania

A grain sack cushion with black flanking red, the boldest stripe combination from the Mureș valley. A piece traced to its origin, carrying the identity of the land.

Székely Collection

There is a corner of Transylvania where the red runs deeper.

Ținutul Secuiesc — the Székely Land — sits at the eastern edge of the Carpathians, where a distinct culture has kept its identity through centuries of shifting borders and empires. The wide red stripe you see on these grain sacks is not decoration. It is declaration.

The hemp was dyed before weaving — a rare and labour-intensive process that produced a colour with extraordinary depth and permanence. This is not wool, as it is sometimes mistaken for. It is pure dyed hemp, hand-woven on wooden looms in the early 1900s.

Each piece in the Székely Collection is individually numbered. When the rescued textile is gone, the number retires with it.

One of a Kind · Limited Edition · dyed hemp · c.1900 · from €110

Lumbar cushion, Szekely Collection, oatmeal antique handspun hemp, 4-shaft twill weave, coral red stripe group — one wide flanked by two narrow lines, Transylvania

A grain sack cushion with the wide red stripe of the Székely – dyed hemp, bold and deliberate. This is not decoration. This is declaration. Individually numbered.

Lumbar cushion, Szekely Collection, oatmeal antique handspun hemp, 4-shaft twill weave, multiple coral red stripe groups across full width, Transylvania

A grain sack cushion with multiple red stripe groups across the full width – the most expressive weave from Székely heritage. When the last piece is gone, it is gone.

The Dyed Collection

The same antique Transylvanian hemp. A different conversation with colour.

Two techniques. Two results. One philosophy.

The coral pieces are overdyed in a warm synthetic coral — uniform, saturated, unapologetic. The natural texture of the century-old hemp absorbs the dye unevenly, producing a depth that no new fabric can replicate.

The indigo pieces are dip-dyed — partially immersed, pulled slowly, allowed to gradient naturally from deep indigo at one end to the raw oatmeal hemp at the other. No two are identical. The ombré is never the same twice.

Both begin as rescued antique grain sacks from Transylvania. Both end as something that belongs equally in a wabi-sabi interior and a contemporary European home. The overdyeing is part of the story, not a concealment of it.

One of a Kind · c.1900 · antique hemp, overdyed or dip-dyed · from €75

Lumbar cushion, The Dyed Collection, oatmeal antique handspun hemp, 4-shaft twill weave, indigo dip-dye ombre — deep blue center fading to pale at edges — partial immersion gradient, Transylvania

Antique grain sack hemp, partially immersed in indigo – deep blue at center, fading naturally toward the edges. The gradient is not printed. It is absorbed.

Lumbar cushion, The Dyed Collection, antique handspun hemp, 4-shaft twill weave, uniform coral overdye — warm terracotta tone, single dark stripe at center, Transylvania

Century-old grain sack hemp given a second life in coral. Uniform, saturated, colourfast. The overdyeing is part of the story, not a concealment of it.
